New Construction, Old Soul: Interior Design for an Asheville Modern Cottage

The challenge with new construction is making it feel like a home — not just a sterile box built from the latest materials. Our client for this project came in with a strong personal style we described as modern cottage. Her vision informed every selection, from the flooring and lighting to the final pillows on the sofa.

Because we were involved from the early planning stages, we were able to work closely with the builder to ensure cohesive, intentional design choices throughout the process. The result is a finished space that feels polished, warm, and deeply personal.

Throughout the home, we leaned on rich wood tones, soft curves, saturated jewel colors, and washes of large-scale wallpaper to bring depth and personality.

The main floor’s open layout — combining kitchen, dining, and living — is unified by a soft, neutral palette. Texture and warmth come through in layered textiles, organic finishes, and architectural elements. High lofted ceilings lined with oak beams are balanced by oversized iron chandeliers, while curved, wood-trimmed arches break up the clean modern lines and add an inviting softness to the structure.

To contrast the calm of the communal areas, the auxiliary rooms take a bolder turn. These spaces feature saturated colors, graphic wallpapers, and gold accents — a mix of mood, pattern, and light that makes the home feel both grounded and expressive.
