Before & After: A Colorful Revival of an Asheville Midcentury Modern Classic

Built in 1959 and designed by Asheville architect Bert King, this midcentury home had all the bones of a classic — original kitchen layout, vintage bathrooms, and architectural integrity that still held strong. But inside, time had stood still.

Our clients came to us with a clear goal: keep the soul, update the experience.

Before: Original Charm, Stuck in Time

The original kitchen was still intact — charming, but dated and disconnected from how our clients live today. Guest bathrooms felt utilitarian and cold, and the powder room had seen better decades.

Yet the home’s vintage details told a beautiful story. A wallpapered breakfast nook ceiling in soft blues, warm browns, and citrus tones caught our attention immediately. It was full of personality, and it deserved to stay.

After: Bold Color, Smart Function, Midcentury Soul

We used that ceiling as a jumping-off point. The kitchen now blends blue cabinetry with wood-toned tile flooring, bright yellow barstools, and clean-lined finishes — an intentional balance of new and nostalgic. It’s fresh, but it belongs here.

In the guest bath, we went all in on color and shape. A custom-painted floating vanity, white modern hardware, and a geometric blue-and-orange tile pattern give the space a vibrant, joyful feel — like the 1960s, made smart for today.

And then there’s the powder room. Gone are the brown grid tiles and louvered doors. In their place: a bold teal cabinet, playful circular backsplash tile, and orange sconces that feel both unexpected and perfectly placed. It’s a confident little room with a whole lot of personality.

Timeless, Not Trendy

This project wasn’t about erasing the past — it was about honoring it with fresh eyes. Thanks to open collaboration with our clients and a shared respect for great design, this Asheville midcentury modern home now lives up to its history — and then some. Now it’s made its own history by winning a 2025 STARS Award for Design.
