Asheville Interior Design: Midcentury Modern Home Renovation with Bold Color

We had the unique opportunity to refresh a classic Asheville Midcentury Modern home built in 1959 — complete with its original kitchen and guest bathrooms. Designed by renowned architect Bert King, our goal was to modernize the interior while honoring its mid-century roots.

Design inspiration started right above us: the breakfast nook ceiling. Still clad in its original wallpaper and vintage two-light pendant, it was a detail we knew had to stay. The cool-toned blues, earthy browns, and pops of yellow and orange found overhead became the palette for the new kitchen. Blue cabinetry, wood-look tile, and vintage lemon-yellow barstools built a bridge between past and present.

The guest bathroom was a full reimagination. A custom-painted floating vanity, crisp white hardware and lighting, and a bold blue-and-orange tile pattern now bring a vibrant mid-century vibe with modern functionality.

The powder room saw the biggest transformation. Originally finished with brown grid tile and louvered doors, it’s now a streamlined, personality-filled space. A vivid teal cabinet, playful circular backsplash tile, and bright orange sconces give this bathroom a strong, joyful identity — bold, fresh, and unmistakably mid-century modern
